Welcome
Our goal is to share historical and genealogical information relating to eastern Yuba County, California, including the past and present towns of Smartsville, Timbuctoo, Sucker Flat, Empire Ranch and Mooney Flat.
We hope that this site will benefit and help to connect researchers interested in the Smartsville and Timbuctoo area.
Current Projects
v Kathy continues to add to the Rose Bar Family Tree on Ancestry.com. This ambitious project ties into the Genealogies project (see below).
v Kathy and Lane are currently compiling and editing a new volume of writing by George Rigby, the "Sage of Smartsville" and author of He Made a Saddle and Wrote a Book.
The new volume will not be a reprint of the original book, but rather an expanded, completely new work, which will include not only every story published in the earlier book but also: over 25 stories that didn't appear in the original book; reporting and poems by George that didn't appear in the first book; notes elaborating on, clarifying, or otherwise explaining the main text; and a complete index of local, national and international names, places and events mentioned in the text.
Future Projects
v Oral histories. We hope to begin recording (via audiotape, videotape, manuscript, etc.) and archiving the stories of current and former residents (and their decendents) of the Smartsville and Timbuctoo area. Please contact us if you would like to participate in this project.
v Genealogies. Many single men and women from the Smartsville and Timbuctoo area ultimately married their neighboring townsfolk, weaving together a rich tapestry of family histories. With respect for anonymity and privacy as our priority, we hope to document as accurately as possible the families who called Smartsville and Timbuctoo their homes.
Even history buffs like to keep current. Please visit us on Facebook for more on the Smartsville and Timbuctoo Project.
